A third of a million
chickens in Thorington?

A planning application (C/08/0652) has been put in to Suffolk Coastal District Council by a company called Hillfairs to open an intensive chicken farm with 340,000 birds on the site of the old Thorington gravel pit, about eight miles from Southwold and close to Minsmere wildfowl reserve.

You can see full details by clicking here and entering the application number C/08/0652

How does this affect you?

  1. Potential health risks caused by avian flu and ongoing storage of rubbish. Avian flu must be of especial concern this close to Minsmere.
  2. Noise pollution.
  3. Dust pollution.
  4. Air pollution causing the unpleasant smell of this type of farm to be carried to the surrounding areas.
  5. Ethical and nutritional grounds about intensive (factory) chicken farming
  6. The disposal of poultry faeces onto fields will cause disruption of the eco-balance, especially as it runs off into the Blyth.
  7. Rubbish disposal proposals are very vague in their application and it is clear that they have made insufficient plans.
  8. Potential negative effects on local tourism
  9. Unlikely to provide significant local employment
  10. This proposal goes completely against the grain of Greenest County into which the people of Suffolk are currently putting a lot of effort.
